Our Mission
The Beyond Prisons Coalition works to transform New Jersey's criminal legal landscape. Grounded in evidence, restorative justice and collective action, BPC advances human-centered, community-based solutions that reduce harm, dismantle systemic inequities and build pathways for healing, safety and liberation beyond incarceration.
Our Core Values
Centering Impacted Voices
We believe those most directly impacted by incarceration, especially those who are or who have been incarcerated, must lead the movement for change. Their lived experience is essential to shaping policy, advocacy and solutions.
Reparative and Transformative Justice
We prioritize approaches that repair harm, restore relationships and address root causes of violence - moving beyond punishment toward harm reduction, healing and accountability.
Collaboration, Innovation and Evidence-Based Action
We work collaboratively across sectors to develop creative, data-informed solutions that reduce harm, build a more just and effective system and make our communities healthy and safe.
Racial Justice and Equity
We are committed to dismantling the racially disproportionate impact of incarceration on Black communities and other marginalized groups and to confronting the systemic racism embedded in the criminal legal system.
Community Investment Over Incarceration
We support redirecting resources from prisons to communities, investing in housing, healthcare, education and other supports that prevent harm and strengthen collective well-being.
Human Dignity and Care
Every person deserves to be treated with dignity. We advocate for humane prison conditions, for the safety and autonomy of all incarcerated people, and for the full implementation of laws that honor human dignity and protect vulnerable populations.
Reentry, Independence and Opportunity
We are committed to fully resourcing people returning from prison so they can live safely, independently and productively with access to the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.
